The Heart and The Fist by Eric Greitens

Author, warrior, and humanitarian Eric Greitens shares his story of extraordinary leadership and service. In a life lived at the raw edges of the human experience, Eric has seen what can be accomplished when compassion and courage come together in meaningful service. As a Rhodes Scholar and U.S. Navy SEAL, Eric worked alongside volunteers who taught art to street children in Bolivia and led U.S. Marines who hunted terrorists in Iraq. He learned from refugees in Bosnia and Croatia, from survivors of the genocide in Rwanda, and from Navy SEALs who fought in Afghanistan. Greitens was a lieutenant in the Navy SEALs when his platoon was hit by a suicide truck bomb in Fallujah, Iraq in 2007. He took his combat pay and founded The Mission Continues, a non- profit agency which trains wounded veterans for leadership roles in their communities. The principal lesson Eric learned through unique background in military service and humanitarian work was that in order to create meaningful change, one must be both good and strong.
The Heart and the Fist

“Clear-eyed account of a youth devoted to service as a warrior and a humanitarian…A remarkable story told with modesty and grace.”
- Kirkus Reviews

“If you’re in despair about America’s future, meet my hero – Eric Greitens. His life and this book reminds us that America remains the land of the brave and generous. The heart and fist are just the combination we need.”
- Tom Brokaw, Former NBC News Anchor, and Author

“A must read for  anyone with a conection to the Military but will appeal to a wide audience. I read a comment that, It will leave you wanting to be a better person. That statement was very, very true.” Josh Kindlesparker USMC Veteran

“A glorious tale of humanity, resolve, and strength, Greitens’s book reminds us of how many things we take for granted in our well-ordered lives.”
- Publisher’s Weekly

“If you worry that America is no longer a home of heroes, come read this book by Eric Greitens…He writes admiringly of the Greek notion of phronesis, practical wisdom – ‘the ability to figure out what to do while at the same time knowing what is worth doing.’ Mr. Greitens has plenty of phronesis.”
- David Gergen, CNN Political Analyst, and Director of the Center for Public Leadership at the Harvard Kennedy School

“A remarkable story you’re not likely to forget.”
- The Washington Post

Strength and Compassion by Eric Greitens

Strength and Compassion Book CoverStrength and Compassion brings together the best of Eric Greitens‘ award-winning international humanitarian photography work with a striking series of essays. Engaging photographs from Rwanda, Cambodia, Albania, Mexico, India, the Gaza Strip, Croatia, and Bolivia, are combined with bold, intelligent essays on strength, pity, dignity, courage, faith, time, hope, and compassion.

Though the photographs for this book were taken in different countries and amid different struggles, a common theme emerges: even in times of great hardship and in the face of great evil, people with strength and compassion can live with courage. We see the unmistakable, sometimes irreparable consequences of violence and war, yet we also see the unmistakable, always inspiring power of men, women, and children who live through these trials with dignity and emerge with hope.

Ideas and images come together to touch the reader directly. Holocaust survivor Nesse Godin says of Strength and Compassion, “Eric Greitens’ photographs and essays help us all to see that, even in the most difficult circumstances, we can act with kindness. We can make a difference…I love Eric’s book because it helps us to remember, but more importantly, it teaches us how to act.”

Greitens has worked with and photographed some of the world’s most vulnerable populations in situations of great suffering, yet his images and essays stand as a tribute to the dignity and strength of human beings.

Reviews from Amazon

Wow! Having heard the author speak long before this book was published, I’m not surprised at the results captured in this wonderful text whose title summarizes the essence of the words and photos perfectly. The title also distills, but oversimplifies, what Eric Greitens is about as a person. Like the best of anything, in this case a book, Strength & Compassion is a representation of the inner soul of its creator. While I have bought the book for a number of friends as gifts, many others have picked it up at my house and parted with their own hard-earned dollars to buy it for themselves AND others. That’s powerful! By Buddy Reisinger on December 18, 2008

In our daily activities, we tend to focus our attention on trivialities. We lose perspective of what is truly important and fail to realize how our actions can affect others. This book provides the reader a window to the human spirit by showing how people can overcome insurmountable odds with “Strength and Compassion”. By L. Keet on December 10, 2008

Review from Amazon

This book reads like a primer on how to “grow up” and do something significant no matter how big or small the “what gets done” is. Mr Greitens has done well in describing the multitude of problems which need work and provides sources to be involved. He put his life on the line, no small feat. In the end, we are all brothers and sisters – we need each other and this book shows how first steps can be taken whether as a SEAL or as a volunteer to put our lives on the line for others. Great read.

I’ve read Eric Greitens‘ incredible life story in The Heart and the Fist: the Education of a Humanitarian, the Making of a Navy SEAL; a compelling autobiography by a young man who has successfully fused two of life’s paths which most consider diametrically opposed — humanitarianism and force.

Now, in The Warrior’s Heart, he retells this story with a new focus aimed at teen readers. Here, he shares more of the emotions he felt, he shows us more about his family, and he consistenly asks the reader What Would You Do? after he presents the tough choices he’s made along the way. One of my favorite by-products from the book is how it leaves teen readers with the awareness that they aren’t limited to just being one way or just doing one thing with their lives.

Two great available extras are the Teacher’s Guide for classroom use and the Mission Planning Guide to help the reader start planning his/her own life’s adventure of doing for others. As a professional Young Adult Librarian, I’d recommend this book for classroom discussions and book groups in addition to individual readers. I think teachers (and their students) will love this book. By Audrey Susan Jacobs on October 14, 2012
